In the time of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), it was common for the scholars of that era to distort their religious books. This is mentioned in the words of Allah Almighty:
"Among them are unlettered people who have no knowledge of the Scripture except wishful thinking. They rely on assumptions. So woe to those who write the Book with their own hands and then say, 'This is from Allah,' to sell it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written, and woe to them for what they earn."
[Surah Al-Baqarah: 78-79]
Today, if people observe the judges and leaders, they will find similar behavior in mocking the divine commands, distorting the meanings of proofs and verses to suit their desires, and accepting bribes to change or invalidate the truth. Such actions make truth appear as falsehood. Upon reflection, it becomes clear that corruption has spread like an endless ocean, whose shores are unknown. This also reflects the behavior of innovators and extreme grave-worshippers, whose practices have been discussed in other sections as well.
The distortion of religious teachings, whether by altering the text or misrepresenting its meanings, continues to be a problem today, just as it was in earlier times.
