Different Stages of Dates in Islamic Teachings

Narrated in Abu Dawud from a companion of the Prophet ﷺ:
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the mixing of unripe dates (Balh) with dried dates in preparing a drink."

The fruit of the date palm goes through various stages from emergence to full ripeness. Each stage has distinct qualities, effects, sizes, and colors.

The stages are as follows:
  • "Ṭala‘" – The initial emergence of the date fruit.
  • "Khilāl" – The stage following Ṭala‘.
  • "Balḥ" – Unripe green dates.
  • "Busr" – Semi-ripe dates.
  • "Ruṭab" – Ripe and soft dates.
  • "Thamar" – Fully ripened, dried dates.
  • "Zahw" – Another term used for unripe dates.
