Did the Prophet ﷺ Have a Shadow? Clear Proofs from Hadith
Taken from: Fatawa Rashidiyyah, p. 223
❖ Question:
Did the Prophet ﷺ have a shadow?
❖ Answer:
Some people argue, as proof that the Prophet ﷺ was created from light (nur), that he did not have a shadow.
This claim is completely false, and the evidence proves otherwise.
① First Reason
- All living beings created by Allah have a shadow.
- To exclude the Prophet ﷺ from this universal law requires clear and authentic proof from the Qur’an or Sunnah.
- Since no such proof exists, the claim cannot be accepted.
② Second Reason: Proof from Hadith
In Musnad Ahmad, an incident is narrated from both ‘Aishah (رضي الله عنها) and Zaynab bint Jahsh (رضي الله عنها), with hasan chains.
❖ Incident:
During Hajj, the Prophet ﷺ became displeased with Zaynab (رضي الله عنها) and did not visit her for two months. Later, as narrated from Safiyyah (رضي الله عنها):
فلما كان شهر ربيع الاول دخل عليها فرأت ظله فقالت إن هذا الظل رجل وما يدخل على النبى ﷺ فمن هذا فدخل النبى ﷺ…
Translation:
“When the month of Rabi‘ al-Awwal came, the Prophet ﷺ came to her (Zaynab). She saw his shadow and said: ‘This shadow looks like a man, but the Prophet ﷺ does not come to me, so who could this be?’ Then the Prophet ﷺ entered, and he reconciled with her.”
❖ Conclusion
- This Hadith clearly establishes that the Prophet ﷺ did have a shadow.
- Umm al-Mu’minin (رضي الله عنها) herself saw it.
- Once a reliable narration confirms the matter, false and baseless claims lose all value.
Hence, the belief that the Prophet ﷺ did not have a shadow is unfounded and contrary to authentic evidence.
