Source: Fatawa Ilmiyyah – Tawdih al-Ahkam, Volume 2, Page 409

❖ The Claim

A widely circulated narration alleges that Imam Shafi'i (رحمه الله) stated:

“Indeed, I seek blessings through Abu Hanifa and visit his grave every day. Whenever a need arises, I pray two rak'ahs and come to his grave, asking Allah for my need at his place, and it is not long before it is fulfilled.”
(Tārīkh Baghdād)

❖ Meaning of the Narration

This implies:
➊ Imam Shafi’i sought blessings through Abu Hanifa (رحمه الله).
➋ He would visit his grave daily.
➌ In times of need, he would pray and ask Allah near his grave.
➍ His needs would then be fulfilled.

❖ Sources of the Narration

This narration appears in:
  • Tārīkh Baghdād (Vol. 1, p. 123)
  • Akhbar Abi Hanifa wa Ashabihi by Al-Saymari (p. 89)

The chain is:
Mukarram bin Ahmad → Umar bin Ishaq bin Ibrahim → Ali bin Maymun → “I heard al-Shafi’i…”

❖ Status of the Narrator: Umar bin Ishaq bin Ibrahim

  • This narrator is unknown in authentic biographical records.
  • Shaykh al-Albani (رحمه الله) declared him non-ma‘ruf (unrecognized).
    (Silsilah al-Da‘ifah, Vol. 1, p. 31, Hadith No. 22)

Conclusion:
  • This narrator is majhool al-haal (status unknown).
  • Hence, this narration is rejected due to a weak chain.

❖ Promotion of a Rejected Narration

Some authors used this weak narration as evidence, such as:
  • Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Salihi al-Shafi’i (‘Uqud al-Juman, Arabic p. 363, Urdu p. 440)
  • Ibn Hajar al-Haytami (al-Khayrat al-Hisan, Arabic p. 94, Urdu p. 255)

However:
  • These authors cited the narration without authenticating the narrator.
  • Their reliance on weak and baseless narrations in biographical works undermines scholarly standards.

❖ Another Baseless Anecdote

Some claim that Imam Shafi’i once:
  • Did not recite Qunoot in Fajr prayer at the grave of Abu Hanifa out of respect.

This is cited by:
  • Al-Ashbiti (d. 810H or 883H)
  • Referenced in ‘Uqud al-Juman, al-Khayrat al-Hisan, Tadhkirat al-Nu‘man, Sartaj al-Muhaddithin

Status:
  • This narration has no chain.
  • It is fabricated, false, and unacceptable.

❖ More Fabrications

  • Muhyiddin al-Qurashi mentioned Imam Shafi’i recited Bismillah quietly (ikhfa') based on undocumented historical references.

Status:
  • No chain provided, thus invalid.

❖ Position of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله)

He refuted such fabricated narrations using:
  • Hadith principles
  • Rational arguments

❖ Burden of Proof

Anyone asserting this incident must:
➊ Provide a sound and connected chain.
➋ Mere citation from books is insufficient.

❖ Imam Shafi’i’s Actual Views on Imam Abu Hanifa

  • No authenticated praise from Imam Shafi’i for Imam Abu Hanifa.
  • On the contrary, criticisms from Imam Shafi’i against Abu Hanifa are recorded with authentic chains.

Sources:
  • Adab al-Shafi’i wa Manaqibuhu by Ibn Abi Hatim (p. 171–172; 201–202 – Authentic)
  • Tārīkh Baghdād (Vol. 13, p. 437; Vol. 2, p. 177–178 – Authentic)

❖ Conclusion

No authentic narration exists showing Imam Shafi’i visited the grave of Imam Abu Hanifa.
➋ These stories are fabricated and false.
