Did Imām Abū Ḥanīfah Author Any Book? – A Research Analysis of “Musnad Imām al-Aʿẓam”

Question:

Did Imām Abū Ḥanīfah (رحمه الله) author any book?

Background:

Among Ahl al-Ḥadīth, the prevailing understanding is that no authored work directly from Imām Abū Ḥanīfah’s own hand exists today. His sayings and fatāwā were compiled only around three centuries after his death.

When this is discussed with Deobandī scholars, they often refer to the book Musnad Imām al-Aʿẓam, claiming it to be authored by Imām Abū Ḥanīfah himself.

This raises two questions:
① Is Musnad Imām al-Aʿẓam truly authored by Imām Abū Ḥanīfah?
② If not, what is its scholarly status?

Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd:

It is an established and undisputed fact that no book authored or compiled by Imām Abū Ḥanīfah himself is available today.

  • It is possible he may have written certain works.
  • However, unfortunately, either they were lost over time or were not preserved by those claiming adherence to the Ḥanafī school.

Wallāhu aʿlam.

Historical Background of the “Musnad Imām al-Aʿẓam”

The book known today as Musnad Imām al-Aʿẓam became popular among later scholars. In its introduction, ʿAbd al-Rashīd Nuʿmānī (a Deobandī scholar) clarified:

“The book presently being translated under the title Musnad Imām al-Aʿẓam is actually authored by Imām ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥārithī. It was abridged by ʿAllāmah al-Ḥaṣkafī, and Mullā ʿĀbid Sindī later rearranged it according to the chapters of fiqh.”

Biography and Chronology of Imām ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥārithī

  • Born: 264 AH
  • Died: 375 AH
  • Lifespan: 81 years
    (Lisān al-Mīzān, Vol. 3, p. 429, no. 478)

Timeline gap: He was born 114 years after the death of Imām Abū Ḥanīfah (d. 150 AH).

Ḥadīth Critics’ View on al-Ḥārithī:

Many leading ḥadīth scholars labelled him a liar (kadhdhāb):

  • Imām Aḥmad al-Sulaymānī
  • Abū Zurʿah
  • Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Rāzī
  • Imām al-Ḥākim
  • Al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī
  • Al-Khalīlī

No reliable ḥadīth scholar ever authenticated him.

  • Lisān al-Mīzān (Vol. 3, pp. 348–349)

Ruling in Light of Ḥadīth Principles:

  • Imām ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥārithī is unanimously considered weak and accused of falsehood.
  • According to ḥadīth methodology, a narrator accused of lying is rejected (mardūd).
  • Furthermore, in the Musnad, most chains from al-Ḥārithī to Imām Abū Ḥanīfah are unknown and unacceptable.

Conclusion:

  • Musnad Imām al-Aʿẓam is not authored by Imām Abū Ḥanīfah.
  • It is a later compilation by a weak and unreliable narrator, ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥārithī, with problematic and mostly unknown chains.
  • Thus, in terms of ḥadīth authenticity, it cannot be relied upon for sound evidence.
