Is it true that Abu Hasan Al Ashari & repented & retracted from his views? If so what is the evidence of this?

What is often said about Abu al-Hasan al-Ashʿari (رحمه الله) "repenting" or "retracting" in a way that can be stated with certainty is not established with clear, decisive evidence that removes all doubt.
Matters like a person’s final inner state, sincerity, and what settled in the heart at the end of life are from the unseen. We do not speak with absolute certainty about them without firm proof.
Allah تعالى says:
﴿إِنَّ رَبَّكَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ﴾
“Indeed your Lord knows best who has strayed from His way, and He knows best the guided.”
So the safer and more correct approach is to say: this claim is largely based on the perception and assertions of some people, and Allah knows best what his final condition truly was.
