Deliberately Missing Salah: Ruling on Qada and Acceptance

Source: Ahkam wa Masail in Light of the Qur'an and Hadith, Volume 02

❖ Question:

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah wrote in his Fatawa that if a person deliberately misses a prayer, the Qada (make-up) of that prayer is not accepted, nor does making up the prayer expiate the sin of deliberately abandoning it. What does this statement mean?

❖ The Answer:

This statement means that if someone intentionally abandons a prayer without any valid Shar'i excuse, and later attempts to make up for it (Qada), then that Qada prayer does not absolve them of the original sin. According to Ibn Taymiyyah, deliberately abandoning Salah is a grave sin, and its expiation cannot be achieved merely through offering Qada. This position is shared by other scholars who assert that deliberate neglect of prayer cannot be compensated by later performing it.

❖ Scholarly Disagreement:

There is a difference of opinion among scholars on this issue:

✔ The majority of scholars (Jumhur) maintain that performing Qada is obligatory, whether the prayer was missed with or without an excuse.

✔ However, some scholars such as Dawud Zahiri, Ibn Hazm, and certain Shafi'i scholars, argue that for someone who deliberately misses a prayer, Qada is not obligatory. Rather, such a person is sinful, and repentance (Tawbah) and seeking forgiveness (Istighfar) are required—not merely Qada.

✔ Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah also supports this view, stating that Qada will not erase the sin of intentionally missing the prayer.

The majority base their ruling on a Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ:
"فَدَیْنُ اللّٰہِ أَحَقُّ أَنْ یُقْضٰی"
(Sahih Bukhari)

Translation: "The debt owed to Allah is more worthy of being fulfilled."

This Hadith is understood to generally apply to all obligatory duties, thus the majority of scholars view Qada Salah as obligatory even when missed intentionally.

❖ Summary:

Intentionally abandoning Salah is a major sin, and merely offering Qada does not expiate the sin.
◄ The majority of scholars view Qada as obligatory, regardless of the reason for missing the prayer.
◄ Some scholars, including Ibn Taymiyyah and the Zahiris, assert that repentance and seeking forgiveness are necessary, and that Qada does not suffice to erase the sin.
