Cutting Hair for Women

Fatwa by: Former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Shaykh Ibn Baz (رحمه الله)

Question:

I trim my hair from the front, as it sometimes reaches my eyebrows. Is it permissible for a Muslim woman to do this?

Answer:

It is permissible for a woman to trim or cut her hair, and there is no harm in doing so, except for shaving the head, which is strictly prohibited. A woman should not shave her head unless there is a medical reason or necessity. However, trimming the hair for reasons such as length or thickness is acceptable, provided that it is done in a manner that is aesthetically pleasing to both the woman and her husband, and it does not resemble the hairstyle of non-believing women.

Trimming hair is also permissible because long hair can sometimes pose difficulties during bathing or combing. Therefore, if a woman finds her hair too long or excessive and decides to trim it, there is no harm in doing so, as this does not cause any negative consequences. In fact, trimming the hair for reasons of beautification, where both the woman and her husband appreciate the appearance, is also acceptable. We do not find any reason to prohibit such an action.

However, as for completely shaving the head, it is not permissible except in cases of illness or medical necessity.

And Allah knows best.
