Criticism of the Hadith Narrator Thunā ibn Ṣabāḥ by the Early Imams

What is said regarding the narrator Thunā ibn Ṣabāḥ?


◈ Answer:​


Thunā ibn Ṣabāḥ is weak and abandoned (ḍaʿīf wa matrūk).


❀ Statements of the Scholars​


Imam Ibn ʿAdī رحمه الله (365 AH):
“The early Imams have declared Thunā ibn Ṣabāḥ weak, and weakness in his hadith is very clear.”
(الكامل في ضعفاء الرجال: 8/172)


Hafiz al-ʿIrāqī رحمه الله:
“He is weak according to the majority.”
(فيض القدير للمناوي: 1/69)


Hafiz al-Haythamī رحمه الله:
“He is abandoned according to the majority.”
(مجمع الزوائد: 4/297)


✅ Conclusion:
Thunā ibn Ṣabāḥ is unanimously graded as weak by the majority of scholars, with many considering him completely abandoned (matrūk). His narrations hold no weight in the science of Hadith.
