Could Sayyiduna Umar رضي الله عنه have been a Prophet? A Research Review of the Traditions

This excerpt is taken from Sheikh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amanpuri's book Khatm-e-Nubuwwat.

Review of Objections Raised Against the Belief in the Finality of Prophethood

Every Muslim believes in the finality of prophethood; whoever does not believe in the finality of prophethood is not a Muslim. This belief is established with certainty through explicit texts and the consensus of the Ummah, leaving no room for doubt. However, questions are raised about this belief, so it has been deemed appropriate to mention these objections and present their scholarly review, so that Muslims may come out of doubts and uncertainties and live under the life-giving shade of the belief in the finality of prophethood:

The Arabs say about the word لو that it indicates two things are mutually dependent, meaning if one does not exist, the other does not exist either. As the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "If there was a prophet after me, it would be Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه." Since Sayyiduna Umar رضي الله عنه is not a prophet, no one else can be a prophet.
