❀ Question
While performing wuḍūʾ, should the right hand be washed first or the left?
❀ Answer
In wuḍūʾ, it is recommended (mustaḥabb) to wash the right hand before the left.
❀ Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr (رحمه الله, d. 463 AH) said:
"قد أجمعوا أن الأفضل أن يغسل اليمنى قبل اليسرى وأجمعوا أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كذلك كان يتوضأ"
— The scholars are unanimous that it is preferable to wash the right hand before the left, and they are also unanimous that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform wuḍūʾ in this manner.
(al-Tamhīd, 14/330)
He further stated:
"أجمعوا أن من غسل يسرى يديه قبل يمناه أنه لا إعادة عليه"
— The scholars are unanimous that if someone washes the left hand before the right during wuḍūʾ, his wuḍūʾ is still valid and there is no need to repeat it.
