Correct Hand Placement During Tashahhud: Knees or Thighs?

❖ Question


In the position of Tashahhud, should one place the hands on the thighs (ران) or on the knees (گھٹنے)? A detailed explanation is requested.


❖ Answer


✔ In Tashahhud, it is recommended to keep the fingers of the hands close together — there is no need to spread them apart.


❖ Authentic Hadith References from Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim


➤ One narration states:


"Place the right hand on the right knee and the left hand on the left knee."
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)


➤ Another narration in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim indicates that:


"Hands may also be placed on the thighs."


❖ Conclusion


✔ Both methods — placing hands on the knees or on the thighs — are correct and established from the Sunnah.


✔ Therefore, the worshipper has the choice to adopt either practice, and both are valid.
