Contentment, wisdom, self-accountability, and the injunctions regarding poverty and destitution

This excerpt is taken from the Arabic book Al-Awamer wal Nawaahi by Sheikh Hussain bin Mubarak Al-Mawsili, whose Urdu translation has been done by Muhammad Sarwar Gohar Sahib under the title Ahkamaat o Mamnooat.

Instructions Regarding Contentment

① It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas رضي الله عنهما that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
قد أفلح من أسلم ورزق كفافا وقنعه الله بما آتاه
"Whoever accepts Islam, provision is given to him according to his sustenance, and Allah has granted him contentment with what He has given him, then he has succeeded."
Reference: Muslim, Kitab al-Zakat 1054, Tirmidhi, Kitab al-Zuhd 2348, Ibn Majah, Kitab al-Zuhd 4138.

② It is narrated from Sayyiduna Fudala bin Ubaid رضي الله عنه that he heard the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم say:
طوبى لمن هدي إلى الإسلام وكان عيشه كفافا وقنع
"Glad tidings for the person who has been granted the guidance of Islam, whose livelihood is sufficient, and who is content."
Reference: Tirmidhi, Kitab al-Zuhd 2349, Musnad Ahmad, remaining Musnad al-Ansar 6/19. The narration is authentic.

Instructions Regarding Wisdom

① It is narrated from Sayyiduna Auf bin Malik رضي الله عنه that the Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم judged between two men. The one against whom the judgment was made, when he turned away, said: "Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best disposer of affairs." The Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
إن الله يلوم على العجز ، ولكن عليك بالكيس فإذا غلبك أمر فقل: حسبي الله ونعم الوكيل
"Allah does not blame for helplessness and incapacity. But it is necessary for you to adopt wisdom. When a matter overcomes you, then say: Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best disposer of affairs."
Reference: Abu Dawood, Kitab al-Aqdiyah 3627, Musnad Ahmad, Baqi Musnad al-Ansar 24/6.

② It is narrated from Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aws رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
الكيس من دان نفسه وعمل لما بعد الموت ، والعاجز من أتبع نفسه هواها وتمنى على الله
"A wise person is one who knows himself and acts for the life after death. And a helpless person is one who follows his desires and relies on hopes from Allah."
Reference: Tirmidhi, Kitab Sifat al-Qiyamah wal-Raqa'iq 2461, Ibn Majah, Kitab al-Zuhd 4260. The narration is weak. In its chain, Abu Bakr bin Abi Maryam is weak in hadith.

Commands for Self-Accountability

① It is narrated from Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aws رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
الكيس من دان نفسه وعمل لما بعد الموت ، والعاجز من أتبع نفسه هواها وتمنى على الله
"A wise person is one who recognizes himself and acts for the life after death, and a helpless person is one who follows the desires of the self and makes wishes from Allah."
Reference: Tirmidhi, Book of the Description of the Resurrection, Softening of Hearts, and Piety from the Messenger of Allah 2459. Ibn Majah, Book of Asceticism 4260.

Commands Regarding Poverty and Neediness

① It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
أللهم أحيني مسكينا وأمتني مسكينا واحشرني فى زمرة المساكين يوم القيامة
"O Allah! Keep me alive as a poor person, cause me to die in a state of poverty, and gather me among the poor on the Day of Resurrection."
The narrator states that Sayyida Aisha رضي الله عنها said: Why, O Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم?
"Because they will enter Paradise forty years before the wealthy. Sayyida Aisha رضي الله عنها! Love the poor and keep them close, Allah will bring you close on the Day of Resurrection."
Reference: Tirmidhi, Kitab al-Zuhd 2352, Bayhaqi fi al-Kubra 18/7.

② Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid رضي الله عنه reports that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
قمت على باب الجنة فإذا عامة من دخلها المساكين ، وأصحاب الجد محبوسون ، غير أن أصحاب النار قد أمر بهم إلى النار ، وقمت على باب النار فإذا عامة من دخلها النساء
"I stood at the gate of Paradise and saw that most of those entering were poor, while the wealthy were stopped. But these wealthy are not the ones destined for Hell, for they have already been sent to Hell. Then I stood at the gate of Hell and saw that most of those entering were women."
Reference: Bukhari, Kitab al-Riqaq 6547, Muslim, Kitab al-Dhikr wa al-Du'a wa al-Tawbah etc. 2096/4 Hadith 273/93.
