We have divided religion into “shell” and “kernel,” for example, when discussing matters like keeping the beard, people speak of such a division. Is this correct?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā baʿd:
Dividing Islam into terms like “shell” and “kernel” is a false and baseless notion, because:
❀ Islam in its entirety is “kernel”, not just certain parts of it.
❀ The religion is wholly beneficial for humanity.
❀ Every aspect of it serves as a means to attain closeness to Allah and earn reward.
❀ The greater a person’s faith and inclination to turn towards his Lord, the greater the benefit he attains.
❀ Even matters like clothing and appearance, if practiced in accordance with the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, will earn reward.
❀ In worldly terms, a shell has no benefit and is discarded.
❀ However, no part of Islam is without benefit.
❀ The entire Islamic law is “kernel,” provided that:
✿ The intention is sincerely for Allah.
✿ The action is performed beautifully in accordance with the Sunnah of the Messenger ﷺ.
❀ Those who promote such false expressions should reflect deeply.
❀ They should recognize and follow the truth.
❀ Such frivolous and baseless classifications must be abandoned.
❀ Indeed, in Islam some matters are very great and of supreme importance, as in the hadith:
«بُنِیَ الْإِسْلَامُ عَلَی خَمْسٍ شَهَادَةِ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللّٰهِ وَإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّکَاةِِّ وَصَوْمِ رَمَضَان وحج بيت الله الحرامَ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Īmān, Bāb Duʿāʾukum Īmānakum, Ḥadīth: 8; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Īmān, Bāb Arkān al-Islām wa Duʿāʾimihi al-ʿiẓām, Ḥadīth: 16)
Translation: Islam is built upon five pillars:
➊ Bearing witness that there is no deity except Allah and that Muḥammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah.
➋ Establishing the prayer.
➌ Giving zakāh.
➍ Fasting in the month of Ramaḍān.
➎ Performing pilgrimage to the Sacred House of Allah.
❀ While the importance of some rulings may differ, none are like a shell that can be discarded or ignored.
❀ Regarding the beard:
❀ It is unquestionably an act of worship, because:
✿ The Prophet ﷺ commanded it.
✿ Anything commanded by the Prophet ﷺ is worship.
✿ It is a means of attaining closeness to Allah.
❀ By keeping it, a person:
✿ Obeys the Prophet ﷺ.
✿ Follows the Sunnah of all the Prophets, as Allah said:
﴿يَبنَؤُمَّ لا تَأخُذ بِلِحيَتى وَلا بِرَأسى﴾ (Sūrah Ṭāhā: 94)
Translation: “O son of my mother! Do not seize me by my beard or by my head.”
❀ Furthermore, hadith confirms that:
The Prophet ﷺ stated that keeping the beard is part of the fitrah upon which Allah created mankind.
❀ Therefore, keeping the beard is not a mere habit but a form of worship.
❀ Considering it a “shell” or worthless is a clear misunderstanding.
