❀ Sayyidah Fāṭimah bint Qays رضي الله عنها narrates:
Abū ʿAmr bin Ḥafṣ رضي الله عنه divorced her with three divorces in his absence and sent some clothes through his agent. She became upset upon seeing the small amount. He said: By Allah! You have no right upon us.
She went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and presented the entire matter before him. The Prophet ﷺ said to her: “There is no maintenance upon him for you.”
He then instructed her to observe her ʿiddah in the house of Umm Sharīk, and later said: “She is a woman whom my Companions frequently visit; therefore, observe your ʿiddah in the house of Ibn Umm Maktūm, for he is blind. If you remove your outer garments, there is no harm. When your ʿiddah is complete, inform me.”
She said: When my ʿiddah was completed, I informed him that Muʿāwiyah bin Abī Sufyān رضي الله عنه and Abū Jahm رضي الله عنه had sent marriage proposals to me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “As for Abū Jahm, he strikes women frequently, and as for Muʿāwiyah, he is a poor man who possesses no wealth. Therefore, marry Usāmah bin Zayd رضي الله عنه.”
Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها said: I did not like him. The Prophet ﷺ again said: “Marry Usāmah bin Zayd.” So I married him, and Allah placed such goodness and blessing in it that I later began to feel envious (of my own fortune).
❖ Question:
Can the financial status—whether prosperity or poverty—of a man be taken into consideration at the time of marriage?✿ Answer:
It is permissible to consider the poverty or prosperity of the man with whom a marriage is being arranged; there is no Sharʿī prohibition in doing so. However, this should not be the primary criterion. The real standard should be religious commitment and upright character, while all other matters hold secondary importance.❀ Sayyidah Fāṭimah bint Qays رضي الله عنها narrates:
