Conditional Ihram Concession and Ruling When Prevented from Completing Hajj

By: Imran Ayoob Lahori

If There is a Fear of Being Prevented from Completing Hajj

A person may enter into conditional ihram (ihram with a stipulation).
If any obstacle arises preventing completion of Hajj or ‘Umrah, the person will be released from ihram without the obligation of sacrifice (hady) like a mahsoor (one prevented).

Hadith Evidence

Hazrat ‘A’ishah (رضي الله عنها) narrated:

The Prophet ﷺ visited Hazrat Dubā‘ah bint al-Zubayr ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib.
She said: “O Messenger of Allah! I intend to perform Hajj but I am sick.”
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Perform Hajj, but stipulate that my place of exiting ihram will be where You, O Allah, prevent me."

Ruling

  • Conditional ihram is a valid concession for those who fear illness, travel restrictions, political barriers, or any other hindrance.
  • If the stipulated condition occurs, the pilgrim exits ihram without offering a sacrifice.
  • Without this stipulation, a mahsoor (prevented pilgrim) must sacrifice an animal to exit ihram.
