Comprehensive Supplication

Author: Shaykh Hafiz Abdul Sattar Al-Hammad (May Allah protect him)

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً، وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً، وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

"O Allah! Grant us goodness in this world and goodness in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." [Sahih Bukhari / Book of Supplications: 6389]

Benefits:

Narration by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him):

It is reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) frequently recited this supplication. This supplication comprises comprehensive words, requesting every form of goodness for both this world and the Hereafter. The term "Hassanah" refers to blessings, through which the Prophet (peace be upon him) sought protection from the punishments of the Hereafter while requesting blessings for this world and the next.

Reason for Sequence:

The supplication prioritizes the request for worldly goodness first because this life precedes the Hereafter. If a person enjoys goodness in this world, being self-sufficient, it increases the hope for success in the Hereafter.

Practice During Tawaf:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) would recite this supplication while performing Tawaf between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone. [Sunan Abu Dawood / Book of Rituals: 1892]

Personal Use of the Supplication:

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) would recite this supplication for himself or on behalf of others. [Sahih Muslim / Book of Remembrance, Supplication, Repentance, and Seeking Forgiveness: 6840]

A Healing Example:

On one occasion, the Prophet (peace be upon him) visited a sick man who had become emaciated due to illness. He asked the man if he had made any supplications or asked Allah for anything. The man replied that he had prayed: "O Allah! If You intend to punish me in the Hereafter, then give me that punishment in this world." The Prophet (peace be upon him) exclaimed: "Subhan Allah! Can you bear that?" He then advised the man to recite the aforementioned supplication. By Allah's mercy, the man regained his health after reciting it.
