Complete Ruling on Reciting Thana in Obligatory and Sunnah Prayers

Source: Aḥkām wa Masā’il – Discussion on Ṣalāh, Volume 1, Page 134

❖ Question

When a person begins Fajr prayer, should he recite Thana (i.e., Subḥānaka Allāhumma…) or any other duʿāʾ al-istiftāḥ only at the beginning of Sunnah rakʿāt, or also at the start of the Fard prayer?
Likewise, if someone joins the congregation in the second or third rakʿah, is he required to recite this duʿāʾ as well?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!

Every worshipper should recite Subḥānaka Allāhumma or any other duʿāʾ al-istiftāḥ (opening supplication) immediately after Takbīr al-Taḥrīmah and before recitation of Qur’ān, in whichever rakʿah he begins his prayer.

◈ Detailed Ruling

Type of Prayer
◈ Whether the prayer is Fard or non-Fard (Sunnah/Nafl), this duʿāʾ is Sunnah to recite at the start.

State of the Worshipper
◈ If a person is praying alone, he recites it.
◈ If he is the Imam, he recites it.
◈ If he is a Muqtadī (follower), he also recites it.

Joining the Congregation Late
◈ If the follower joins from the very beginning, he recites it after Takbīr al-Taḥrīmah.
◈ If he joins in the second or third rakʿah, then in the first rakʿah he performs, he should recite Thana at the start.

✅ Conclusion:
Reciting Thana (duʿāʾ al-istiftāḥ) is Sunnah at the beginning of every prayer — Fard, Sunnah, or Nafl — and it is to be recited by the Imam, the follower, or the individual worshipper, whether starting from the beginning or joining late.
