✦ Prayer and Iḥrām in an Airplane – Detailed Rulings

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd...

◉ Performing Prayer in the Airplane

✔ Nafl (Voluntary) Prayer:

Can be offered while seated on the airplane seat.
✿ The direction of the Qiblah is not a condition.
Rukūʿ and sujūd should be done with gestures.
✿ In sujūd, bend more than in rukūʿ.

Conditions for Offering Obligatory (Farḍ) Prayer:

Farḍ prayer may be offered on the plane only if:

❀ It is possible to face the Qiblah fully, and
Standing, rukūʿ, sujūd, and sitting (qaʿdah) can be performed properly.

✖ If these conditions cannot be fulfilled, the obligatory prayer should not be performed on the plane.

Delaying the Farḍ Prayer:

✿ If it is not possible to fulfill the conditions for farḍ ṣalāh onboard:
Delay the prayer until after landing.

✿ If prayer time may expire, then two options apply:

Combine prayers onboard (e.g., Ẓuhr + ʿAṣr or Maghrib + ʿIshā).
➋ If landed in time, perform the prayer on ground and combine if needed.

Example:
If Ẓuhr time is nearly over, pray Ẓuhr and ʿAṣr together on the plane.
If Maghrib time ends during flight, delay it and pray Maghrib + ʿIshā after landing.
If both will expire, pray both onboard before time ends.

Note: ʿIshā time extends until midnight.

How to Perform Farḍ Prayer Properly:

  1. Stand facing the Qiblah (if possible).
  2. Say "Allāhu Akbar" to begin.
  3. Recite duʿā’ al-istiftāḥ, then Sūrat al-Fātiḥah, followed by another portion of Qur’an.
  4. Perform rukūʿ, then stand upright.
  5. Perform two sujūd, with sitting between them.
  6. Continue in this manner until prayer is complete.

✿ If sujūd is not possible, do so by gesture while seated, with sujūd more lowered than rukūʿ.

✿ If Qiblah direction is unknown and no one trustworthy is there to guide:

❀ Do your best to determine the Qiblah,
❀ Then pray facing that direction.

✔ Ruling on Qasr (Shortening) While Traveling:

✿ A person traveling by air is a Shar‘i traveler.
✿ Therefore, four-rakʿah prayers are shortened to two rakʿāt.

Assuming Iḥrām in the Airplane

Four Possible Methods:

Prepare at Home:

❀ Perform ghusl (ritual bath)
❀ Wear regular clothes or Iḥrām garments
❀ One may wear Iḥrām from home if desired.

Wearing Iḥrām in the Plane:

❀ If Iḥrām was not worn at home, then once the plane nears the mīqāt, wear Iḥrām garments inside the aircraft.

➌ Making Intention and Saying Talbiyah:

❀ Once the plane reaches parallel to the mīqāt,
❀ Make intention for Ḥajj or ʿUmrah,
❀ Say Talbiyah aloud (e.g., “Labbayk Allāhumma ʿUmrah”).

➍ Wearing Iḥrām Early as a Precaution:

❀ If there is fear of forgetting or uncertainty about the exact location of the mīqāt,
❀ It is permissible to assume Iḥrām before reaching the mīqāt,
❀ This precaution is allowed and carries no blame.

Conclusion:

Islam provides complete guidance and flexibility for travelers by air concerning ṣalāh and Iḥrām. Following the above rulings ensures both correctness of worship and ease in its performance.
