When and How to Perform Sajdah al-Shukr — Complete Guidance
Taken from: Fatawa Arkan al-Islam

❖ When to Perform Sajdah al-Shukr:

When a calamity is removed
Such as recovery from an illness or deliverance from danger or distress.

When a blessing is received
Such as achieving success, abundance in provision, or receiving glad tidings.

❖ Nature of Sajdah al-Shukr:

◈ This prostration is performed outside of Salah, just like Sajdah al-Tilawah is performed outside of prayer.

◈ Its manner is the same as Sajdah al-Tilawah.

❖ Views Regarding Wudu:

Some scholars are of the opinion that Sajdah al-Shukr should be performed with Wudu.

According to them:
❀ Before going into prostration, one should say Allāhu Akbar.
❀ Then, upon prostrating, say "سُبْحَانَ رَبِّیَ الْاَعْلٰی".
❀ After that, supplicate to Allah ﷻ.

Other scholars hold that:
❀ Saying Allāhu Akbar when going into prostration is sufficient.
❀ In the prostration, the same remembrance and supplication should be done.

❖ Summary:

Sajdah al-Shukr is an important act of expressing gratitude to Allah ﷻ for His bestowed blessings.
Performing it with Wudu is preferable, although there is a difference of opinion.
Its method is the same as Sajdah al-Tilawah and should include praise of Allah and supplication.
