Question:

Who are the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet ﷺ?

Rāfiḍī sect members limit Ahl al-Bayt to only ‘Alī رضي الله عنه and his household, using as proof the verse of Mubāhalah. They claim that when Allah commanded the Prophet ﷺ to bring his Ahl al-Bayt for the mubāhalah with the Christians, he only brought ‘Alī رضي الله عنه, Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها, and al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn رضي الله عنهما.

Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, ammā ba‘d:

The definition of Ahl al-Bayt is not restricted to only ‘Alī رضي الله عنه and his household.

The Ahl al-Bayt Include:

  1. The pure wives (Azwāj Muṭahharāt) of the Prophet ﷺ.
  2. His daughters.
  3. His grandsons and granddaughters.
  4. ‘Alī رضي الله عنه is also included, as the Prophet ﷺ himself counted him among the Ahl al-Bayt.

Important Clarification:

Including ‘Alī رضي الله عنه in Ahl al-Bayt does not mean excluding the rest of the Prophet’s family, such as the noble wives. The Qur’an and authentic Sunnah make it clear that the wives of the Prophet ﷺ are indeed from his Ahl al-Bayt.

Conclusion:
Ahl al-Bayt is a comprehensive term covering all members of the Prophet’s ﷺ household — his wives, children, grandchildren, and close family — not just the household of ‘Alī رضي الله عنه.
