“The most beloved of deeds to Allah are those that are most consistent, even if small.” – Bukhari

Companionship Based on Love and Togetherness in the Hereafter

Author: Dr. Muhammad Zia-ur-Rahman A‘zami (رحمه الله)
Chapter: A Person Will Be with Whom He Loves

«باب الْمَرْءُ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ»

Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) reported:
I was walking with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as we were leaving the mosque when a man met us near the mosque’s entrance and asked:
“O Messenger of Allah! When is the Hour (Day of Judgment)?”
The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, “What have you prepared for it?”
The man was humbled and replied, “O Messenger of Allah, I have not prepared for it with many prayers, fasts, or charities — but I love Allah and His Messenger.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) responded:
“Then you will be with those whom you love.”
[Agreed upon: al-Bukhari 7153; Muslim 2639]

Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) reported:
A man came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said, “O Messenger of Allah! What do you say about a man who loves a people but has not yet reached their level (in deeds)?”
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“A person will be with those whom he loves.”
[Agreed upon: al-Bukhari 7169; Muslim 2640]

Abu Musa (رضي الله عنه) reported:
It was said to the Prophet (ﷺ), “A man loves a people, but he has not yet joined them.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) replied:
“A person will be with those whom he loves.”
[Agreed upon: al-Bukhari 6170; Muslim 2641]

Abu Dharr (رضي الله عنه) reported:
He said, “O Messenger of Allah! A man loves a group of people, but cannot perform deeds like theirs.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) replied:
“O Abu Dharr! You will be with those whom you love.”
Abu Dharr then said, “Indeed, I love Allah and His Messenger.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Then you are with those whom you love.”
Abu Dharr repeated it, and the Prophet (ﷺ) repeated his answer.
[Sahih: Abu Dawud 5126; Ahmad 21379, 21463; al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad 351]

Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) reported:
“I never saw the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) rejoice more over anything than they did when a man said:
‘O Messenger of Allah! A person loves someone for the good deeds he does, but he himself is unable to do those same deeds.’
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“A person will be with those whom he loves.”
[Sahih: Abu Dawud 5127]

These narrations demonstrate that sincere love for the righteous and for Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) — even without matching their level of deeds — can be a means of companionship with them in the Hereafter, by Allah’s mercy.
