Explanation of the Hadith Regarding ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها Demonstrating Ghusl
Source: Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah, Vol. 1 – Kitāb al-ʿAqāʾid, p. 209
Narrated in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (Ḥadīth 251, Kitāb al-Ghusl, Bāb al-Ghusl bi al-Ṣāʿ wa Naḥwihi):
Abū Salamah and the (foster) brother of ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها entered upon her and asked about the ghusl of the Prophet ﷺ. She called for a container of water, approximately a ṣāʿ, and poured water over her head while a screen separated them.
This ḥadīth has been misunderstood and misrepresented by some. Below is a clarification based on classical scholarship:
Some companions believed women must undo their braids during ghusl al-janābah. However, ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها responded strongly to this:
“How strange of Ibn ʿAmr! He commands women to undo their hair for ghusl. Why doesn’t he command them to shave their heads then?”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Ḥadīth 747)
This indicates that undoing the hair is not obligatory in ghusl. Pouring water over the head suffices.
She demonstrated by pouring water over her head three times, clarifying that combing or undoing hair is not required, as long as water reaches the roots.
Abū ʿAwānah al-Isfarāʾīnī titled the chapter in his ṣaḥīḥ:
“The washing container used by the Prophet ﷺ and the explanation of pouring water only over the head in ghusl al-janābah”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Abī ʿAwānah, 1/294)
This supports the view that ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها demonstrated only the head-washing, not a full ghusl.
In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (Ḥadīth 320):
“فأفرغت على رأسها ثلاثاً”
“She poured water over her head three times.”
No mention of washing the rest of the body appears here, affirming the focus was on the head only.
Both Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim mention:
“وبيننا وبينها حجاب”
“There was a screen between us and her.”
Similarly, when the Prophet ﷺ bathed at the conquest of Makkah:
“وَفَاطِمَةُ تَسْتُرُهُ بِثَوْبٍ”
“Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها was covering him with a cloth.”
(Muwaṭṭāʾ Mālik: 356, Bukhārī: 357, Muslim: 719)
This proves the presence of a barrier and upholds ḥijāb even before maḥārim.
The two present were maḥārim:
Ref: Fatḥ al-Bārī, 1/365
Shaykh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān (Deobandi scholar):
"ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها washed behind a screen and only her head and upper part were visible, which is allowed for maḥārim."
(Faḍl al-Bārī, 2/428)
Mawlānā Ghulām Rasūl Saʿīdī (Barelvi scholar):
"Those who object claim that ʿĀʾishah bathed in front of strangers. In truth, those present were not strangers but maḥārim, and she was behind a screen."
(Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 1/1019–1029)
◈ This ḥadīth teaches the method and water quantity for ghusl.
◈ ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها poured water only over her head, not performing a full-body ghusl in front of them.
◈ There was a curtain between her and those present.
◈ The individuals were maḥārim, not unrelated men.
◈ The head wash was done to demonstrate permissibility of not undoing hair in ghusl.
◈ The objection is baseless, and the narration is authentic and properly understood in context.

➏ The Men Were Maḥārim
The two present were maḥārim:
- The foster brother is reported to be ʿAbdullāh ibn Yazīd al-Baṣrī or Kathīr ibn ʿUbayd al-Kūfī
- Abū Salamah was a foster nephew of ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها (son of her foster sister)
