Causes That Make Ghusl Obligatory in Islam

Source: Fatāwā Arkān-e-Islām

1. Discharge of Semen (Mani) with Desire

  • Whether awake or asleep, if semen is discharged with sexual desire, ghusl becomes obligatory.
  • Even if during sleep there is no conscious feeling of desire, the occurrence of a wet dream and discharge of semen necessitates ghusl.
  • The rule is: Whenever semen exits with desire, ghusl is fard.

2. Sexual Intercourse (Jima‘)

  • If a man engages in intercourse with his wife and the male organ penetrates into her private part, ghusl is obligatory for both, regardless of whether ejaculation occurs.
  • Evidence:
    • Earlier hadith: «الْمَاءُ مِنَ الْمَاءِ» — implying ghusl was required only with ejaculation.
    • Later ruling abrogating the first:

      «إِذَا جَلَسَ بَيْنَ شُعَبِهَا الْأَرْبَعِ ثُمَّ جَهَدَهَا فَقَدْ وَجَبَ الْغَسْلُ وَإِنْ لَمْ يُنْزِلْ»
"When he sits between her four limbs and exerts himself, ghusl is obligatory, even if he does not ejaculate."
      [Bukhari: 291, Muslim: 348]
  • Many are unaware of this ruling and skip ghusl if no ejaculation occurs — this is a serious mistake.

3. Menstruation (Hayd) and Postnatal Bleeding (Nifas)

  • After menstruation ends, ghusl is obligatory.
  • Similarly, after postnatal bleeding stops, ghusl is fard.

Qur’anic Evidence:

﴿فَإِذا تَطَهَّرنَ فَأْتوهُنَّ مِن حَيثُ أَمَرَكُمُ اللَّهُ﴾
"When they have purified themselves, then approach them as Allah has commanded you."
[Al-Baqarah: 222]

  • The Prophet ﷺ also instructed women with istihadah to wait for the usual menstrual period, then perform ghusl.
  • The method of ghusl after hayd or nifas is the same as ghusl for janabah.
  • Some scholars recommend using sidr (lotus leaves) in the water for greater cleanliness.

4. Death

  • According to scholars, death is also a cause for ghusl — meaning it becomes obligatory on the living to wash the deceased.

Evidence:

  • Regarding his daughter, the Prophet ﷺ said:

    «اِغْسِلْنَهَا ثَـلَاثًا، أَوْ خَمْسًا، أَوْ سَبْعًا...»
"Wash her three times, or five times, or seven times, or more if you see fit."
    [Bukhari: 1253, Muslim: 939]

  • Regarding a muhrim who died, he ﷺ said:

    «اِغْسِلُوهُ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ...»
"Wash him with water and lotus leaves..."
    [Bukhari: 1256, Muslim: 1206]

  • The deceased is no longer legally responsible for acts of worship, but the living must wash the body in compliance with the Prophet’s ﷺ instruction.
