Can the Attributes of Allah ﷻ Be Established Through Analogy and Personal Opinions?

◈ Question:

Can the attributes of Allah ﷻ be established through analogy (qiyās) and personal opinions?

◈ Answer:

The attributes of Allah ﷻ are tawqīfī (restricted to revelation). Allah ﷻ is to be described only with those attributes which He has affirmed for Himself, or which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has affirmed for Him. In other words, Allah’s attributes are limited to what has been mentioned in the Qur’an and Sunnah.

They cannot be established by analogy or personal reasoning. To ascribe attributes to Allah ﷻ based on one’s opinions is a form of ilḥād (deviation).

❀ Statement of the Scholars

Imam Ibn Khuzaymah رحمه الله (311 AH):
“We do not use opinions and analogies as proof regarding the attributes of our Lord.”
(كتاب التوحيد: 1/136)

✅ Conclusion:
Allah’s attributes are only established through revelation — the Qur’an and Sunnah. It is impermissible to rely on analogy or personal views to affirm attributes for Allah ﷻ, as doing so is considered deviation.
