Can One Shorten Prayers on a 12-Mile Journey?

① Introduction

Traveling Muslims are granted the concession of salāh qaṣr (shortened prayers) when the journey meets certain distance criteria. Equally important is the intention to remain at a destination, which affects whether one continues to shorten or must resume full prayers.

② Distance for Prayer Shortening

Prophetic Practice:
  • Messenger ﷺ would shorten two rak‘ahs when setting out on a journey of at least three miles (or three farsakhs ≈ nine miles).

“…when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for a journey of three miles or three farsakhs, he prayed two rak‘ahs.”
    (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

Scholarly Clarification:
  • The measure of nine miles corresponds to the minimum distance generally accepted (about eleven modern miles).
  • Implication: Any travel of roughly eleven miles (≈17 km) or more permits qaṣr.
  • Conclusion: A 12-mile journey thus qualifies one to shorten prayers.

③ Intention and Duration of Stay

Hadith of Ibn ʿAbbās رضی الله عنه:
  • The Prophet ﷺ stayed nineteen days at a location and continued shortening prayers throughout.

“…the Prophet ﷺ resided for nineteen days and shortened prayers. So when we traveled for nineteen days, we shortened; if longer, we completed the prayers.”
    (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1080)

Stays Less Than 20 Days:
  • Intention ≥ 4 days but < 20 days ⇒ continue qaṣr.
Stays ≥ 20 Days:
  • Intention of twenty days or more ⇒ resume full four-rak‘ah prayers.

Note: There is no explicit evidence prescribing a 3- or 4-day cutoff—only the nineteen-day precedent.

④ Practical Rulings

Setting Out Intending 12 Miles:
  • Valid: You may shorten (qaṣr) your prayers.

Intending a Stay Over Four Days (< 20 Days):
  • Continue qaṣr.

Intending a Stay of Twenty Days or More:
  • Perform full prayers.

⑤ Conclusion

Muslim travelers should apply salāh qaṣr once their journey reaches the threshold distance (≈11 miles), continuing so if their intended stay is under twenty days. For intentions of twenty days or longer, Quranic and Prophetic guidance mandates returning to the regular four-rak‘ah format.

May Allah make our worship easy and accept our efforts.
