Can Adopted and Biological Daughters Marry the Same Man?

❖ Ruling on Marrying an Adopted and Biological Daughter Together

❀ Question:

A couple adopted a girl and fed her milk purchased from a shop. Later, they had a biological daughter of their own. Can both girls be married to the same man?

Answer by:

Fadheelat al-ʿĀlim Fahd Ansari ḥafiẓahullāh

Yes, both girls can be married to the same man, as they are not legally (Sharʿī) sisters.

The adopted girl was fed store-bought milk, which does not establish a milk (raḍāʿah) relationship.
Therefore, since no blood or foster relation exists between them, there is no Sharʿī prohibition in marrying both to the same man.

Key Ruling:
There is no bar in Islamic law against marrying two women who are not related by blood or valid milk kinship.
