❖ Question:
If a woman is in her waiting period (ʿiddah), is it permissible for her to go and offer condolences to a close relative?
❖ Answer by Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakīl Nāṣir (حفظه الله):
The correct position is that making duʿā and seeking forgiveness for the deceased is sufficient for offering condolence (taʿziyah), and a woman can do this while staying at home.
Remaining in the house during ʿiddah is better and preferable.
However, if there is a genuine necessity, and the woman wishes to go during the daytime for condolence, then there is leeway in this matter.
Still, this is not an essential or mandatory act—i.e., one that cannot be done without. Therefore, it is more appropriate for a woman to remain at home during her ʿiddah period.
