❓ Question

What is the minimum age for a child to lead congregational prayer?

✔ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿammā baʿd!

In the Sharīʿah, there is no explicit age limit mentioned in the Qur’an or ḥadīth for a child to lead the congregation. That is, no fixed age has been made a condition for imāmah in the revealed texts.

If a child fulfills the criterion mentioned in the ḥadīth of being aqarāʾ (the one with greater knowledge of the Qur’an), then he may lead the prayer.

It is authentically reported that:

  • ʿAmr ibn Salamah (RA) led the congregation during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was only six or seven years old.

This proves that if a child surpasses others in knowledge of the Qur’an, then young age does not prevent him from leading the congregation.
