Can a Sick Person Break the Fast with Medicine in Ramadan?

❖ Question:

Can a sick person break his fast with medicine?

Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

✿ Answer:

Yes, a sick person may break his fast with medicine. However, it is better if he first eats or drinks something before taking the medicine so that it does not harm the stomach. Nevertheless, if the medicine is of the type that is prescribed to be taken on an empty stomach, there is no issue in breaking the fast with it.

❀ Qur’ānic Evidence:

Allah Almighty said:

وَمَن كَانَ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ
"And whoever is ill or on a journey – then (he should fast) the same number of days (later) from other days."
(Sūrah al-Baqarah 2:185)

✅ Conclusion:
① A sick person is permitted to break the fast with medicine.
② It is preferable to consume some food or drink first unless the medicine requires an empty stomach.
③ He should later make up the missed fast when he is able.
