❀ Ruling: Can a Lone Worshipper Turn Into an Imam During Salah?

It is permissible and valid for a lone worshipper (munfarid) to become an imam in the midst of prayer, and similarly, the presence of a barrier (like a wall or partition) between the imam and the followers does not invalidate the prayer. These rulings are substantiated by authentic narrations.

❀ Evidence from the Hadith of Ḥaḍrat ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها

It is narrated that:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was offering prayer in his chamber, and the wall of the chamber was low. The people saw the Prophet’s ﷺ body, and so:
"فَقَامَ نَاسٌ يُصَلُّونَ بِصَلَاتِهِ"
“Some people stood and began to pray with his prayer.”
(This continued on the following night as well.)

❀ Supporting Evidence from Ḥaḍrat Anas رضي الله عنه

Another narration from Ḥaḍrat Anas رضي الله عنه also confirms the validity of this practice.

❀ Scholarly View

According to Imām al-Shawkānī رحمه الله, these aḥādīth establish that:

“It is permissible in both voluntary (nafl) and other prayers for a lone worshipper to become an imam mid-prayer.”
[Nayl al-Awṭār: 2/399]

❀ View of Imām al-Bukhārī رحمه الله

Imām al-Bukhārī extracted this ruling from the hadith of ʿĀʾishah and titled a chapter:

"إذا كان بين الإمام وبين القوم حائط أو سترة"
“If there is a wall or partition between the imam and the people.”

He further reported that:

  • Imām al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī رحمه الله said:

“Even if there is a river between you and the imam, it does not harm the prayer.”

  • Abū Mijlaz رحمه الله said:

“If there is a road or a wall between the imam and the followers, it is still valid to follow him as long as his takbīr can be heard.”

Imām al-Bukhārī then narrated the previously mentioned hadith of Ḥaḍrat ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها under this heading.

✅ Conclusion:

It is permissible for an individual already engaged in Salah to become an imam mid-prayer, and barriers like walls or partitions do not invalidate the congregation, provided the imam's takbīr can be heard and the connection of following is maintained.
