Can a Girl Marry Her Milk Nephew in Islam? Ruling Explained

❖ Source:

Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

If an elderly woman breastfed a girl, can that girl marry the grandson of the elderly woman?

✿ Answer:

If the breastfeeding (raḍāʿah) is established, then such a marriage is impermissible.
The girl becomes a milk-aunt (raḍāʿī phuphī) to the grandson of the elderly woman.
Just as marrying a biological paternal aunt is prohibited, similarly, marrying a milk-aunt is also prohibited.

Because in Islamic law:

“Whatever relation is ḥarām through lineage (nasab) is also ḥarām through breastfeeding (raḍāʿah).”

❖ Quranic Evidence:

وَعَمَّاتُكُمْ
﴿النساء: 23﴾

Translation:

“And your paternal aunts are (also) forbidden to you (for marriage).”
[Surah An-Nisā’: 23]

This ruling includes both biological and milk-aunts.

✅ Summary:

  • The girl who drank milk from the elderly woman becomes a milk-aunt to her grandchildren.
  • Therefore, marriage between that girl and the grandson of the elderly woman is not permissible.
  • Milk-kinship (raḍāʿah) establishes the same marital prohibitions as blood relations (nasab)
