Chapter: Brotherhood and Treaties
«باب الاخاء والحلف»
✿ Narrated by ‘Āṣim al-Aḥwal:
I said to Anas ibn Mālik (رضي الله عنه): “Has it reached you that the Prophet ﷺ said: There is no alliance in Islam?”
Anas (رضي الله عنه) replied:
“The Prophet ﷺ did form an alliance between Quraysh and the Anṣār in my house.”
[Muttafaqun ‘alayh: Al-Bukhārī 6083, Muslim 2529]
✿ Narrated by Anas ibn Mālik (رضي الله عنه):
When ‘Abdur-Raḥmān ibn ‘Awf came to us (in Madinah), the Messenger of Allah ﷺ established brotherhood between him and Sa‘d ibn al-Rabī‘.
[Ṣaḥīḥ: Al-Bukhārī 2293]
✿ Narrated by Jubayr ibn Muṭ‘im (رضي الله عنه):
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“There is no alliance in Islam. Any alliance made in the days of ignorance (Jāhiliyyah), Islam only strengthens it.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ: Muslim 2530]
✿ Narrated by ‘Amr ibn Shu‘ayb from his father from his grandfather:
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Makkah, he delivered a lengthy sermon in which he said:
“Fulfill the treaties made in the time of ignorance, for Islam only reinforces them. And do not establish new alliances in Islam.”
[Ḥasan: Aḥmad 6933, Al-Tirmidhī 1585]
✿ Narrated by Ibn ‘Abbās (رضي الله عنه):
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“There is no (new) alliance in Islam. Every alliance from the Jāhiliyyah is only strengthened by Islam. I would not be pleased, even if given red camels, to break the alliance I had made in Dār al-Nadwah.”
[Ḥasan: Al-Ṭabarī in his Tafsīr 6/683]
① Islam does not negate past honorable treaties, but rather confirms and reinforces just agreements.
② Brotherhood in Islam is a formal, spiritual bond initiated by the Prophet ﷺ, especially among the Muhājirīn and Anṣār.
③ New alliances contrary to Islamic principles are discouraged.
④ Upholding moral values and promises made before Islam is part of Islamic integrity.
