The practice of adorning oneself with clean and pleasant clothing on the day of Eid is well established through the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and the understanding of the Companions. It reflects gratitude, joy, and reverence for this blessed day.
➊ Narrated by Jābir (رضي الله عنه):
“The Prophet ﷺ would wear red-striped cloaks on the two Eids and on Fridays.”
[Weak: al-Taʿlīqāt al-Raḍiyyah 1/385, Ibn Khuzaymah: 3/132, Ḥadīth 1766 – Shaykh al-Albānī said the chain contains Ḥajjāj ibn Warṭā’ah, who is weak.]
➋ Narrated by Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما):
“The Prophet ﷺ used to wear a striped cloak (Burd Ḥibrah) on every Eid.”
[Ṭabarānī al-Awsaṭ: 7609 – Al-Haythamī said: All narrators are trustworthy (thiqāt). Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid: 2/198]
➌ Narrated by Ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما):
ʿUmar (رضي الله عنه) once saw a silk garment being sold in the market. He took it to the Prophet ﷺ and said:
“O Messenger of Allah! Buy this and adorn yourself with it for Eid and for receiving delegations.”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“This is only the attire of someone who has no share (in the Hereafter).”
[Bukhārī: 948, 886; Muslim: 2068; Abū Dāwūd: 1076; Nasāʾī: 3/96; Ibn Mājah: 3591; Aḥmad: 2/20]
This clearly prohibits silk for men, even on special occasions like Eid, indicating that modesty and lawful beauty are to be observed.
• Shawkānī (رحمه الله) writes:
“It is Sunnah and praiseworthy to wear the best available garments and apply pleasant fragrance on both Eids.”
[Al-Sayl al-Jarrār: 1/320]
✔ Wearing clean, neat, and presentable clothes on Eid is part of the Sunnah.
✔ It is encouraged to wear the best lawful attire available.
✔ Silk garments are prohibited for men, even for beautification on Eid.
