Authenticity of Salāt al-Tasbīḥ: Analysis of 3 Major Narrations

Detailed Analysis of Three Narrations Regarding Salāt al-Tasbīḥ
Source: Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah, Vol. 1, Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, Page 431

❖ Question:

Habeebullah Shah inquired about the authenticity of Salāt al-Tasbīḥ (The Prayer of Glorification). He pointed out that Shaykh al-Albānī extensively discussed its narrations and only barely classified them as ḥasan, while some authors, such as in Hadiyyat al-Muslimeen (p. 71), declared them ṣaḥīḥ without detailed analysis. A comprehensive explanation is requested.

✅ Response:

الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله، أما بعد!

Several narrations regarding Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ are present in authentic collections. These narrations — though individually debated — collectively achieve the status of ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrihi (authentic due to supporting evidence).

✿ ➊ Ḥadīth of ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما)

◈ Reported in:

  • Sunan Abī Dāwūd (1297)
  • Sunan Ibn Mājah (1387)

◈ Chain Status:

  • Graded ḥasan by many scholars.
  • Abū Bakr al-Ājurrī, among others, graded it ṣaḥīḥ.

    Reference: al-Targhīb wa al-Tarhīb 1/4671

◈ Notable Narrator:

  • Ḥukm ibn Abān — some scholars questioned him, but not to the extent that would drop the narration below the ḥasan grade.

◈ Further Study:

  • al-Tarshīkh li-Bayān Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ (pp. 28–33)
  • Kutub al-Rijāl (Books of narrator criticism)

✿ ➋ Ḥadīth of al-Anṣārī (جابر بن عبد الله الأنصاري رضي الله عنه)

◈ Reported in:

  • Sunan Abī Dāwūd (1299)

◈ Chain Status:

  • The sanad up to al-Anṣārī is ṣaḥīḥ.

◈ Identity Clarified:

  • Al-Anṣārī refers to Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī (رضي الله عنه).

References:

  • Tahdhīb al-Kamāl (3/1666)
  • Dhū al-Futūḥāt al-Rabbāniyyah (4/314)
  • Ḥāshiyah al-Tarshīkh (p. 49)

✿ ➌ Ḥadīth of ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar and ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (رضي الله عنهما)

◈ Reported in:

  • Sunan Abī Dāwūd (1298)

◈ Strengthening Support:

  • ʿImrān ibn Muslim supports the narration of ʿAmr ibn Mālik, lending it greater strength.

Reference: al-Nukat al-Ẓirāf (6/281)

✔ Strengthening Principle Applied

According to the principle of collective strengthening in hadith science:

If a hadith is ḥasan li-dhātihi (intrinsically reliable) and is supported by other similar chains, it can be elevated to ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrihi (authentic due to corroboration).

◈ This principle clearly applies here.
◈ The combined weight of multiple ḥasan-grade narrations justifies the classification of these reports as ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrihi.

✅ Conclusion:

Given the number of narrations, their acceptable chains, and mutual corroboration, the ḥadīths about Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ reach the level of ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrihi.

Acting upon it is valid and established in light of this collective strength.
