Authenticity Analysis of the “Three Things Made Beloved to Me” Ḥadīth

"I Love Three Things from Your World" Ḥadīth – Authenticity and Reality

The Report in Question​

The wording often quoted is:


«حبب إلي من دنياكم ثلاث: الطيب، والنساء، وجعلت قرة عيني في الصلاة»
"Three things from your world have been made beloved to me: perfume, women, and the coolness of my eyes has been placed in prayer."


In the fabricated extended version, the statements of Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān, ʿAlī (رضي الله عنهم) and Jibrīl (عليه السلام) are also mentioned, ending with Jibrīl stating that Allah loves three qualities in His servants.


This extended narration is attributed to the book "al-Munabbihāt" supposedly by Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar.

Research Findings​

1 – Absence from Authentic Ḥadīth Sources​

This long version is not found with a chain of narration in any reliable ḥadīth collection. In the book al-Munabbihāt (attributed to Ibn Ḥajar), it is quoted without any isnād.

2 – False Attribution of "al-Munabbihāt" to Ibn Ḥajar​

• Biographers’ Silence: Scholars who wrote on Ibn Ḥajar’s life and works—such as al-Sakhāwī (al-Ḍaw’ al-Lāmiʿ), al-Shawkānī (al-Badr al-Ṭāliʿ), Ismāʿīl Pasha al-Baghdādī (Hadiyyat al-ʿĀrifīn), and Khayr al-Dīn al-Ziriklī (al-Aʿlām)—never listed al-Munabbihāt among his works.
• Scholars’ Statements:
  
  • Shaykh Abū ʿUbaydah Mashhūr b. Ḥasan Āl Salmān declared the attribution to Ibn Ḥajar false (Kutub Ḥadhdhara Minhā al-ʿUlamāʾ, vol. 2, p. 326).
  • Shaykh Jāsim al-Dawsarī and Shaykh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Fākhūrī supported the same conclusion.
• Real Author: According to Ḥājjī Khalīfah in Kashf al-Ẓunūn (vol. 2, p. 1848), it is authored by Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Ḥajjī/al-Ḥajarī, an unknown figure.

3 – Ibn Ḥajar’s Own Comment on the "Three" Version​

Ibn Ḥajar himself, in al-Talkhīṣ al-Ḥabīr (3/116, no. 1435), declared the "three" addition unsourced.

4 – Source Confusion and Lack of Chain​

Al-ʿAjlūnī in Kashf al-Khafāʾ (1/340, no. 1089) cited it from al-Mawāhib with the statement: "al-Ṭabarī said: narrated by al-Jundī, and the responsibility is on him."
There are several people called al-Jundī, and no full chain back to the Prophet ﷺ is given.

5 – Fabricated Additions​

Later authors like Shabrāmlisī (d. 1087H) and al-Khafājī included further unauthenticated expansions, all of which are baseless.

6 – Authentic Ḥadīth on This Topic​

The authentic narration from Anas b. Mālik (رضي الله عنه) is:


«حبب إلي من الدنيا: النساء والطيب، وجعلت قرة عيني في الصلاة»
"Women and perfume have been made beloved to me, and the coolness of my eyes is in prayer."

• Sunan al-Nasā’ī (7/61, ḥadīth 3391) – ḥasan chain
• Musnad Aḥmad (3/285) – ḥasan
• al-Ḍiyāʾ in al-Mukhtārah (5/116, ḥadīth 1736)

Another authentic wording:
«حبب إلي النساء والطيب، وجعلت قرة عيني في الصلاة»
(Sunan al-Nasā’ī 7/62, ḥadīth 3392 – ḥasan; al-Ḥākim 2/160 – ṣaḥīḥ ʿala shart Muslim)


Note: In the authentic ḥadīth, prayer is not counted as a worldly thing—it is separate from "women" and "perfume."

7 – Final Judgement​

• The long narrative with the companions’ and Jibrīl’s statements is fabricated (mawḍūʿ).
• Its source al-Munabbihāt is not Ibn Ḥajar’s work and is unreliable.
• Authenticity is only established for the short version mentioning women, perfume, and prayer.

Conclusion:
Authentic: Short version in Sunan al-Nasā’ī, Musnad Aḥmad.
Fabricated: Extended version in al-Munabbihāt.
