❀ The Question

A Companion, after hearing about the virtue of Durud Sharif, said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:

"O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I will divide my supplication into four parts: one part will be sending Salat (Durud) upon you, and the remaining three parts will be for supplicating for myself.”

The Prophet ﷺ replied:
"If you increase it, it will be better for you.”

So the Companion said:
"I will make half of my supplication for sending Salat upon you, and the other half for myself.”

Is this hadith authentic? In which books of hadith is it recorded? And should we also recite only Durud in our supplications?

❀ The Answer

Alhamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu ‘ala Rasoolillah, amma ba‘d!

Yes, this hadith is authentic.

➋ It is recorded in Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, in the Book Sifat al-Qiyamah.

➌ It is also found in al-Mustadrak of al-Hakim, Vol. 2, p. 421.

Thus, the narration exists in the reliable works of hadith and can be trusted for its authenticity.

❀ Ruling and Virtue

If a person devotes much of his supplication to sending Salat (Durud) upon the Prophet ﷺ, this is highly virtuous, as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself encouraged it.
