Nūr al-ʿAynayn fī Ithbāt Rafʿ al-Yadayn ʿInd al-Rukūʿ wa Baʿdahu fī al-Ṣalāh

Ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah

Translation:

Sayyidunā Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه (the preserver of the Companions, the jurist Imām, our beloved رضي الله عنه) narrated that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would begin the prayer, he would pronounce the takbīr and then raise both his hands up to his shoulders. When he intended to go into rukūʿ, he would do the same, and when he intended to go into sujūd, he would do the same. He would not do so when raising his head from sujūd. And when he stood up after completing two rakʿahs, he would do the same.

It has a supporting witness with al-Dāraquṭnī in al-ʿIlal, as cited in al-Talkhīṣ al-Ḥabīr 1/219, and its narrators are trustworthy.

Clarification

✔ Ibn Jurayj has explicitly stated hearing (ṣarāḥat al-samāʿ) in this narration.

Important Note (Tanbīh)

This chain is weak due to the tadlīs of al-Zuhrī. It has been presented as a supporting narration (shāhid) for the previous reports.

Response to an Objection

Some people have transmitted two narrations from Sayyidunā Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه in which there is no mention of rafʿ al-yadayn before and after rukūʿ.

Reference: Nūr al-Ṣabāḥ: pp. 72–74

✔ We have already established that the absence of mention does not necessitate the negation of mention.

Conclusion

It will be mentioned ahead that Sayyidunā Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه was both a narrator and a practitioner of rafʿ al-yadayn. Therefore, presenting ambiguous and irrelevant narrations in opposition to a clear and explicit narration is invalid.
