Atheist Behavior and the Right Way to Engage in Dialogue

Effective Dialogue with Atheists and Understanding Their Mindset
Written by: Dr. Zubair

❖ Understanding Atheists’ Behavior

When engaging in dialogue with atheists, it is essential to grasp the motivations behind their behavior.
Nowadays, the term “good atheist” is becoming common—referring to those who, while denying the existence of God, still adhere to social and moral values.

❖ Contradictions in Atheist Conduct

Many atheists, though apparently opposed to religion, exhibit religious behaviors, such as:

✔ Saying phrases like “Shukr Alhamdulillah” or “Jazak Allah”
✔ Performing prayers or adhering to Islamic rituals in marriage and divorce
✔ Respecting concepts of ḥarām and ḥalāl

While these appear contradictory, atheists often justify them as compliance with social norms.
One atheist even stated that he avoids prohibiting funeral rites in his will to prevent distress to his relatives—not out of belief, but due to cultural sensitivity.

❖ The Ideological Foundation of Atheism

Atheism is not merely rejection of religious rituals or symbols—it is a complete worldview.
Some atheists may outwardly conform to religious practices to maintain social harmony, yet continue to promote atheism ideologically.
This reflects a strategic duality in their public and private stance.

❖ Common Traits Among Pakistani Atheists

In the Pakistani context, various profiles emerge among atheists:

① Youth seeking attention and identity, including searching for “female atheists”
② Individuals opposing religious scholars and becoming atheists in reaction
③ Some use anti-religious rhetoric to gain fame or notoriety
④ Their intellectual base often stems from translated works of Western atheists
⑤ Many express inner unrest through criticism of religion, rather than grounded reasoning

❖ Understanding Atheist Tactics

Most atheists avoid core principles of religion and instead:

❖ Fixate on secondary or controversial issues, such as:

  • The Prophet ﷺ’s marriages
  • Polygamy in Islam
  • Hijab and niqāb
  • Jihād, ISIS, and the Taliban

📌 This is a deliberate strategy to distract and derail discussions.

❖ A Methodical Framework for Dialogue

Engaging with atheists effectively requires a step-by-step approach:

Existence of the Creator
→ First establish the reality of a Creator.

Purpose of Creation
→ Discuss the objective behind the Creator’s act of creation.

Need for Religion
→ Clarify the role of religion in human life.

Truthfulness of Islam
→ Present Islam’s validity compared to other faiths.

Necessity of Messengers
→ Emphasize the need for divine guidance through Prophets.

Prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ
→ Prove that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the true Messenger of Allah.

Belief in the Hereafter
→ Explain the concepts of Paradise, Hell, and the Day of Judgment.

❖ Stick to Core Principles, Not Secondary Issues

Until an atheist accepts foundational truths, debating secondary religious matters is futile.
🧭 Focus on principles first—only then can derived issues be discussed meaningfully.

❖ Target the Foundations of Atheistic Beliefs

Analyze their ideology based on their own claimed principles:

Laws of Nature
→ Can natural laws alone be the creator of the universe?

Theory of Evolution
→ Highlight its weaknesses, as it often forms the core of atheist doctrine.

📌 By critically examining these bases, the structure of atheist beliefs collapses.

❖ Summary

In conversations with atheists, the key is to identify and expose contradictions in their beliefs.
Respond to their arguments with logical, principled, and respectful reasoning, so that they may reflect upon the flaws within their own worldview.
