Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
"When the Hour is near, true dreams will come to the believers; a believer's dream is the forty-sixth part of prophethood, and whatever is part of prophethood is not false."

The words of Sahih Muslim are:
"When the Hour is near, the dreams of Muslims will not be false; the truer the dream, the more true dreams he will see."
The Meaning and Significance of True Dreams as a Part of Prophethood:
Revelation was a means of knowing the news of the unseen; with the end of prophethood, it has ceased. Now only true dreams remain. From this, two things are understood: first, that revelation will no longer descend; second, that nothing remains of prophethood, meaning that if there was any existence of shadowy or apparent prophethood, it did not remain after the mission of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Good dreams are a part of prophethood. The hadiths related to this differ among themselves. The scholars of the Ummah have reconciled these hadiths and explained their meanings and implications as follows.
Hafiz Ibn Abdul Barr (463 AH) writes:
"Although the number of parts of prophethood in dreams varies, there is no contradiction in it, and Allah knows best! Because some dreams can be the forty-sixth part, some the forty-fifth, some the forty-fourth, some the twenty-fifth, or the seventieth part. It depends on the condition of the dreamer, how truthful, trustworthy, religious, and firm in belief he is. As a person's condition is, so is the matter of his dream. Allah knows best, whoever worships his Lord with sincerity, is firm in faith, and truthful in speech, his dreams are more truthful and closer to prophethood."

Hafiz Khattabi (388 AH) writes:
"This hadith does not mean that prophethood is divided into parts, nor does it mean that whoever gathers these qualities will obtain acquired or causal prophethood. Prophethood depends on Allah's will; He bestows it upon whom He wills. Allah knows well whom to grant prophethood. With the death of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the chain of prophethood ended with the verses of regret. The meaning of prophethood can also be taken as the prophetic teachings and the invitation of the prophets. Then the meaning of this hadith would be that good dreams are one of the twenty-five parts of the teachings of prophethood and the invitation of the noble prophets."

Allama Ibn Battal (449 AH) writes:
"Being the thousandth part of prophethood is also a great matter, so why was a dream called a part of prophethood? It is necessary to understand its meaning. Consider: the word prophethood is derived from giving news; its meaning is that a dream is true news from Allah, it does not contain falsehood. Just as prophethood is true news from Allah and cannot be false, here a dream is likened to prophethood because of the similarity in the truthfulness of the news."

Hafiz Ibn Al-Jawzi (597 AH) writes:
"A believer's dream is the forty-sixth part of prophethood. This hadith has two meanings. Prophethood contains news of matters that are to occur later; thus, a believer's dream is likened to this. The second reason for the analogy is that the proof of the prophethood of some prophets was that they received revelation from Allah during sleep, and some prophets used to have true dreams before prophethood, then revelation began to come to them while awake. Here the question arises: what is the purpose of calling it the forty-sixth part? Some scholars answered that the period of the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ prophethood is twenty-three years. He spent thirteen years in Mecca, and for the first six months of prophethood, he used to have dreams. This period is the forty-sixth part of the twenty-three years of prophethood. This hadith about the forty-sixth part is narrated in Sahihayn by a group of companions: Sayyiduna Ubada رضي الله عنه, Sayyiduna Abu Huraira رضي الله عنه, and Sayyiduna Abu Saeed Khudri رضي الله عنه. In a narration from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar رضي الله عنه in Sahih Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ said that a dream is the seventieth part of prophethood. According to this hadith, a believer's dreams have different qualities. The lowest quality is the seventieth part, and the highest quality is the forty-sixth part. Ibn Jarir رحمه الله says that the seventieth part is common; it is the dream that every Muslim sees, regardless of his condition. The forty-sixth part is for those who perform ablution well in severe cold, endure disliked things, and wait for the next prayer after one prayer. Similarly, it is also narrated that a dream is the forty-fifth part; this too should be understood according to different conditions."

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (852 AH) writes:
"Ibn Al-Jawzi رحمه الله says that prophethood contains news of matters that are to occur later; a believer's dream is likened to this."

He further writes:
"According to Ibn Tayn رحمه الله, the meaning of this hadith is that with my death, revelation will cease, and future news will only be conveyed through dreams."
Reference: (Fath Al-Bari Sharh Sahih Al-Bukhari: 376/12)
He also states:
"The reason for calling a true dream a part of prophethood is the similarity in truthfulness, nothing else; otherwise, the one who sees a true dream would be called a prophet."
Reference: (Fath Al-Bari Sharh Sahih Al-Bukhari: 20/1)
He further writes:
"The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: Only true dreams remain from prophethood. Here, the apparent words of exception cause confusion that true dreams are called prophethood, which is not the case. A dream is likened to a part of prophethood, and obtaining a part of something does not necessarily mean obtaining the whole thing. For example, if someone loudly says لا اله الا الله, he will not be called a muezzin, although this word is a part of the call to prayer. Similarly, if someone recites a verse of the Quran, it will not be said that he has prayed, although reciting a verse of the Quran is a part of prayer. This meaning is supported by a hadith of Sayyida Umm Kulthum رضي الله عنها, who narrates that she heard the Prophet ﷺ say: Prophethood has ended, and now only glad tidings remain. This hadith was narrated by Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal and Imam Ibn Majah, while Imam Ibn Khuzaymah and Imam Ibn Hibban declared it authentic. In Musnad Abi Ya'la, there is also a narration from Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه that the Prophet ﷺ said: Prophethood and messengership have ended; after me, there is no prophet or messenger. However, glad tidings remain. The companions asked: What is meant by glad tidings? He said: A Muslim's dream is a part of prophethood."
Reference: (Fath Al-Bari Sharh Sahih Al-Bukhari: 375/12)
He further states:
"Hafiz Khattabi رحمه الله says that according to some, dreams correspond to the knowledge of prophethood; they are not a part of prophethood. Others say that dreams are a part of the knowledge of prophethood because prophethood has ended, but its knowledge remains."

Hafiz Iraqi (806 AH) writes:
"Remember that a prophet's dream is revelation, but a non-prophet's dream is not revelation. The Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ statement that true dreams are glad tidings of prophethood is an analogy; dreams are not prophethood, but in their form and truthfulness, they resemble prophethood."

Abu Zur'ah Ibn Iraqi (826 AH) writes:
"This cannot be used as evidence that true dreams are a part of prophethood. For the prophets, certainly this is so, but not for everyone, nor is it possible for a non-prophet to have any part of prophethood. The meaning is that the dreams of a righteous person resemble the dreams of the prophets, so here an analogy is expressed. Khattabi رحمه الله says that these dreams are a part of prophethood for the prophets but not for non-prophets. Prophets receive revelation in sleep just as they do while awake. Therefore, some scholars say that dreams correspond to prophethood but cannot be called a part of prophethood in themselves. Some scholars have said that dreams are a part of the knowledge of prophethood, and the knowledge of prophethood remains while prophethood itself does not."

Allama Ibn Malqan (804 AH) writes:
"The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: After me, prophethood will not remain, but true dreams will remain. The meaning was that after the death of the Prophet ﷺ, revelation would end, and the only means to know future matters would be good dreams."
Reference: (Al-Tawdih Sharh Al-Jami' Al-Sahih: 147/32)
Allama Ibn Malqan (804 AH) writes:
"In my opinion, اقترب الزمان means the approach of the Hour. Ibn Battal رحمه الله explains its meaning as: When the Hour approaches and much knowledge is taken away, due to killing and tribulation, the signs of piety will be erased, people will be in a state of interruption (of revelation), needing a preacher and a renewer to restore the erased signs of religion. A prophet was sent to the earlier nations, but our Prophet ﷺ is the last prophet, and after prophethood, in the near period of interruption, the option of true dreams was left, which are a part of prophethood for giving glad tidings and warnings."
