Are There Any Conditions for Performing a Sharʿī Ruqyah (Healing Incantation)?

Authored by: Dr. Rida Abdullah Pasha ḥafiẓahullāh

❖ Question:

Are there any conditions for performing a Sharʿī (Islamically legitimate) ruqyah?

❖ Answer:

"There is no harm in performing ruqyah using the Book of Allah and prophetic supplications."
[Fatwā, No. 3189, p. 207]

ʿAllāmah Ibn Ḥajar رحمه الله stated:

"The scholars are unanimous that ruqyah is permissible when the following three conditions are fulfilled:"

The ruqyah must consist of the words of Allah, or His names and attributes.

The meaning of the ruqyah must be understood, regardless of the language it is recited in.

The belief must be held that ruqyah itself has no inherent power, but that it is effective only through the will and help of Allah.
