Question:
Are deeds considered a part of īmān (faith)?

Answer:
There is consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah that deeds are part of īmān.

  • Imām al-Nawawī رحمه الله (676H) said:
أما إطلاق اسم الإيمان على الأعمال فمتفق عليه عند أهل الحق ودلائله فى الكتاب والسنة أكثر من أن تحصر وأشهر من أن تشهر.
“As for applying the name ‘īmān’ to deeds, this is unanimously accepted by Ahl al-Ḥaqq. Its evidences in the Qur’an and Sunnah are too numerous to count and more famous than to require mention.”
    (Sharḥ al-Nawawī 1/149; Sharḥ al-Arbaʿīn Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd 33; al-Tawḍīḥ Ibn al-Mulaqqin 2/450)
  • Allah ﷻ says:
    وَمَا كَانَ اللَّهُ لِيُضِيعَ إِيمَانَكُمْ
“Allah would never let your īmān go to waste.”
    (al-Baqarah 143)
  • Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr رحمه الله (463H) said:
لم يختلف المفسرون أنه أراد صلاتكم إلى بيت المقدس فسمى الصلاة إيمانا.
“The exegetes unanimously agreed that here it refers to your prayer towards Bayt al-Maqdis, thus Allah has called ṣalāh ‘īmān’.”
    (al-Tamhīd 9/253)
  • Imām al-Nawawī رحمه الله further said:
    أجمعوا على أن المراد صلاتكم.
“The scholars are unanimous that (in this verse) īmān refers to ṣalāh.”
    (Sharḥ al-Nawawī 1/149)
