﴿ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنكُمُ ٱلرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ ٱلْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهِيرًا ﴾
(al-Aḥzāb 33:33)
Translation: Indeed Allah intends to remove all impurity from you, O Ahl al-Bayt, and to purify you completely.
Context:
The Prophet ﷺ gathered ʿAlī, Fāṭimah, al-Ḥasan, and al-Ḥusayn (RA) under his cloak and said:
«اللَّهُمَّ هَؤُلَاءِ أَهْلُ بَيْتِي، فَأَذْهِبْ عَنْهُمُ الرِّجْسَ وَطَهِّرْهُمْ تَطْهِيرًا»
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2424)
Translation: O Allah! These are my household. Remove from them impurity and purify them completely.
This proves that:
Umm al-Muʾminīn ʿĀʾishah (RA) narrates that when the verse of purification was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ said:
«أنتِ من أهل بيتي»
"You are from my Ahl al-Bayt."
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Musnad Aḥmad)
﴿ قُل لَّآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ أَجْرًا إِلَّا ٱلْمَوَدَّةَ فِي ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ ﴾
(al-Shūrā 42:23)
Translation: Say: I do not ask you for any reward except love for my close kin.
Imām al-Shāfiʿī said:
“This verse proves that love of Ahl al-Bayt is wājib.”
In the Ṣalāh, we recite:
«اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ…»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī – Durūd Ibrāhīmī)
Every Muslim is commanded to send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and his family in every prayer.
Ahl al-Bayt are to be loved, honored, and respected. This is an obligation in Islam.
The Ahl al-Sunnah affirm that the wives of the Prophet ﷺ are part of Ahl al-Bayt, in addition to his
❖ Definition of Ahl al-Bayt
- Linguistically:
“Ahl” means family, members of a household;
“Bayt” means house. - Sharʿīly:
Ahl al-Bayt refers to those who belonged to the household of the Prophet ﷺ, connected to him by a special Sharʿī relationship.
Ahl al-Bayt in the Qur’an
1. Āyat al-Taṭhīr (Verse of Purification)
﴿ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنكُمُ ٱلرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ ٱلْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهِيرًا ﴾
(al-Aḥzāb 33:33)
Translation: Indeed Allah intends to remove all impurity from you, O Ahl al-Bayt, and to purify you completely.
- The verses before and after address the wives of the Prophet ﷺ using feminine pronouns (كُنَّ).
- This proves that the wives of the Prophet ﷺ are included in Ahl al-Bayt.
Ahl al-Bayt in the Sunnah
1. Ḥadīth al-Kisāʾ (The Cloak Narration)
The Prophet ﷺ gathered ʿAlī, Fāṭimah, al-Ḥasan, and al-Ḥusayn (RA) under his cloak and said:
«اللَّهُمَّ هَؤُلَاءِ أَهْلُ بَيْتِي، فَأَذْهِبْ عَنْهُمُ الرِّجْسَ وَطَهِّرْهُمْ تَطْهِيرًا»
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2424)
Translation: O Allah! These are my household. Remove from them impurity and purify them completely.
- Fāṭimah (RA)
- ʿAlī (RA)
- Ḥasan (RA)
- Ḥusayn (RA)
are included in Ahl al-Bayt.
2. Wives of the Prophet ﷺ
Umm al-Muʾminīn ʿĀʾishah (RA) narrates that when the verse of purification was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ said:
«أنتِ من أهل بيتي»
"You are from my Ahl al-Bayt."

The Status of Ahl al-Bayt
1. Love of Ahl al-Bayt is Obligatory
﴿ قُل لَّآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ أَجْرًا إِلَّا ٱلْمَوَدَّةَ فِي ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ ﴾
(al-Shūrā 42:23)
Translation: Say: I do not ask you for any reward except love for my close kin.

2. Sending Ṣalāh upon Ahl al-Bayt
In the Ṣalāh, we recite:
«اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ…»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī – Durūd Ibrāhīmī)

- Ahl al-Bayt includes:
◈ The wives of the Prophet ﷺ (per Qur’an, al-Aḥzāb 33:33)
◈ ʿAlī, Fāṭimah, Ḥasan, Ḥusayn (RA) (per Ḥadīth al-Kisāʾ)
◈ Banū Hāshim, such as ʿAbbās, Jaʿfar, and ʿAqīl (RA) (per ḥadīth on zakāh prohibition)
◈ The Prophet’s ﷺ progeny (esp. through Fāṭimah RA)
