Advising the dying to say La ilaha illallah, consoling the afflicted, strengthening graves, and forbidding sitting on them

This excerpt is taken from the Arabic book Al-Awamer wal-Nawahi by Sheikh Hussain bin Mubarak Al-Mawsili, whose Urdu translation has been done by Muhammad Sarwar Gohar Sahib under the title Ahkamat o Mamnooat.


Encouraging a person near death to recite La ilaha illallah​


① Sayyiduna Abu Saeed Khudri رضي الله عنه narrates, the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
لقنوا موتاكم لا إله إلا الله
"Encourage your people who are near death to say La ilaha illallah."

② Sayyida Aisha رضي الله عنها narrates, the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
لقنوا هلكاكم لا إله إلا الله
"Encourage your dying ones to say La ilaha illallah."
Reference: This narration is authentic, An-Nasa’i 5/4.


Consoling a person afflicted with calamity​


① It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
من عزى مصابا فله مثل أجره
"Whoever consoles a person afflicted with a calamity will receive a reward like his."
Reference: This narration is weak, Tirmidhi, Book of Funerals 1073. Ibn Majah, What is mentioned about funerals 1602, in its chain Ali bin Asim is weak, see Al-Arawa 765.

② It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Burzah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
من عزى ثكلى كسي بردا فى الجنة
"Whoever consoles a woman whose child has gone missing will be clothed with a striped cloak in Paradise."
Reference: Its chain is weak, Tirmidhi, Book of Funerals from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) 1076, Imam Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Its chain is not strong, this narration is rare, researcher Zubair Ali Zai states: In its narration is Munya bint Ubaid who is unknown.


Prohibition of Strengthening Graves​


① It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم forbade making graves solid, sitting on them, and building structures on them.

Prohibition of Sitting on Graves​


① Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reports that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
لأن يجلس أحدكم على جمرة فتحرق ثيابه فتخلص إلى جلده خير له من أن يجلس على قبر
"If any one of you sits on a burning coal that burns his clothes and reaches his skin, it is better for him than sitting on any grave."

② Sayyiduna Abu Murshid Ghannawi رضي الله عنه reports that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
لا تجلسوا على القبور ولا تصلوا إليها
"Do not sit on graves, nor pray facing them."
