📚 Source: Fatawa Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

What is the prescribed time for Fajr (Dawn) Prayer?

❖ Answer:

The time for Fajr Prayer begins from the appearance of true dawn (طلوع فجر) and lasts until sunrise (طلوع آفتاب).

❖ Scholarly Consensus

Imam al-Zayla'i al-Hanafi (رحمه الله, d. 743 AH) stated:
"There is consensus of the Ummah that the beginning time of Fajr is true dawn (Subh Sadiq), and the ending time is sunrise."
📘 (Tabyīn al-Haqā’iq, 1/79)

❖ Practice of the Prophet ﷺ

The Prophet ﷺ used to offer Fajr Prayer during ‘Ghalas’, i.e., when it was still dark in the last portion of the night.

❖ Hadith Evidence

Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"The time for Fajr Prayer is from the appearance of dawn until the rising of the sun."
📘 (Sahih Muslim: 612)

❖ Conclusion:

The start time for Fajr is true dawn (Subh Sadiq), and the end time is sunrise. This has been confirmed by authentic Hadith and unanimous scholarly agreement.

✔ Key Point:
Fajr Prayer must be performed between true dawn and sunrise, and it is preferred to offer it early, during darkness, following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
