A Prevented Pilgrim Must Perform Hajj or ‘Umrah the Following Year

1 – Hadith of Hajjaj bin ‘Amr (رضي الله عنه)


The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:


من كسر أو عرج فقد حل وعليه الحج من قابل
“Whoever breaks a bone or becomes lame, he exits ihram, but must perform Hajj the following year.” (Just as the Prophet ﷺ made up the ‘Umrah of 6 AH in 7 AH)

2 – Wording Including Illness


Another narration says:


من كسر أو عرج أو مرض
“Whoever breaks a bone, becomes lame, or falls ill (then he becomes halal from ihram).”

3 – Hadith of Ibn ‘Abbas (رضي الله عنهما)


“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was prevented from reaching the Ka‘bah, so he shaved his head, had marital relations with his wives, and sacrificed his hady. Then he performed ‘Umrah the following year.”

4 – Hadith of Ibn ‘Umar (رضي الله عنهما)


“Whoever is prevented from Hajj should, if possible, perform the Tawaf of the Ka‘bah and the Sa‘i of Safa and Marwah, then exit ihram completely. The following year he should perform Hajj and sacrifice an animal; if he cannot find one, then he must fast.”

Summary Ruling


  • A pilgrim who is prevented (mahsoor) due to injury, illness, or external obstruction exits ihram.
  • He is required to make up the missed Hajj or ‘Umrah the next year.
  • This was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ when prevented at Hudaybiyyah.
