7 Sunnahs of Eid: Women’s Participation and Takbir Traditions

Women’s Participation in the Eid Prayer

1. Hadith of Umm ‘Atiyyah (RA)

Umm ‘Atiyyah (RA) said:

"We were commanded to bring out (for Eid) even the menstruating women and the virgins in seclusion so that they might witness the congregation of the Muslims and their supplications. The menstruating women would stay away from the prayer area but join in the supplications and takbirs so they could share in Allah’s mercy and forgiveness."

A woman asked: "If one of us does not have a jilbab (outer garment), what should she do?"
The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Let her sister lend her a jilbab."
(Bukhari 351; Muslim 890)

2. Attendance of Adult Girls

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"It is obligatory for every adult girl to come out for the Eid prayers."
(al-Albani, Silsilah al-Ahadith al-Sahihah 2408)

Takbir Traditions of Eid

3. Statement of Hafiz Ibn Hajar (رحمه الله)

No authentic hadith from the Prophet ﷺ specifies the exact wording of Eid takbirs; the most authentic reports are from the Sahabah (RA).

4. Takbir of ‘Ali (RA)

‘Ali (RA) would say the takbirs from Fajr on the Day of ‘Arafah (9 Dhul-Hijjah) until ‘Asr on the 13th of Dhul-Hijjah.
(al-Sunan al-Kubra al-Bayhaqi 3/315; authenticated by al-Hakim and al-Dhahabi)

5. Practice of Ibn ‘Umar (RA)

Ibn ‘Umar (RA) would say the takbirs from his home to the Eid ground on Eid al-Fitr.
(al-Sunan al-Kubra al-Bayhaqi 3/279)

6. Statement of Imam al-Zuhri (رحمه الله)

People would recite the takbirs from their homes to the Eid ground, then join the Imam in takbirs.
(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 2/165)

7. Takbir of Ibn ‘Abbas (RA)

From Fajr on the 9th to ‘Asr on the 13th of Dhul-Hijjah, he would say:

اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا، اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا، اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ وَأَجَلُّ، اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلِلّٰهِ الْحَمْدُ
(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 2/165 – authenticated by al-Hakim and al-Dhahabi)

8. Takbir of Salman (RA)

اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا
(al-Sunan al-Kubra al-Bayhaqi 3/315)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar considered this the most authentic wording.

9. Takbir of Ibrahim al-Nakha‘i (رحمه الله)

(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 2/165)

10. Takbir of Ibn Mas‘ud (RA)

He would also say the same wording as Ibrahim al-Nakha‘i.
(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 3/321 – authenticated by al-Albani in Irwa’ al-Ghalil 3/125)
