5 Fiqhi Rulings on Uncertain Urine Contact with Garments

❖ 5 Shari’ah Rulings on Purification When Urine Contact Is Uncertain ❖
📚 Taken from: Fatāwā ad-Dīn al-Khāliṣ, Volume 1, Page 325

❀ Question:

If a girl's urine has touched a garment but the exact location is unknown, what should one do? Is it sufficient to sprinkle water over the garment?

➊ Obligation to Wash the Garment (If Possible)

If it is certain that urine has come in contact with the garment, it is obligatory to remove and wash the garment.

However, if washing is not possible, such as in the absence of water, then it is permissible to perform ṣalāh while wearing the same garment.

➋ Sprinkling Water Is Not Sufficient

Imām Ṭaḥāwī (رحمه الله) states in Maʿānī al-Āthār (Vol. 1, p. 43):

“Do you not see that if urine touches a garment and the exact location is unknown, merely sprinkling water is not sufficient to purify it? Rather, it must be washed to ensure removal of the impurity.”

Hence, sprinkling (رشّ) does not remove actual najāsah when its presence is certain.

➌ No Amount of Impurity Is Excused

Some people mistakenly believe that if severe impurity (najāsah ghalīẓah) is equal to a dirham in size, it is excused.
This view, however, has no valid Shar’i proof.

Islamic law does not prescribe a minimum amount of impurity that can be ignored.
Therefore, any amount of impurity must be removedif possible.

➍ Only Shar’i Impurity Requires Washing

Not everything labelled "impure" by jurists is necessarily Shar’an (Islamically) impure.
Thus, we clarify that washing is obligatory only when the impurity is established by Shar’i evidence.

This is important, as some impurities classified by jurists lack clear evidence from the Qur’an or Sunnah.

➎ Following Authentic Evidence Is Obligatory

A Muslim must base his religious practice only upon Qur’ān and Sunnah.
He should seek clarity in his dīn through authentic proofs and must not accept opinions without evidence.

This principle applies to purity and impurity as it does to all aspects of Islam.

✅ Summary:
When it is certain that urine has come in contact with a garment:

Washing is obligatory, not just sprinkling.
◈ If unable to wash, prayer is still valid.
No specific quantity of impurity is excused without evidence.
◈ Only Shar’i-defined impurity must be removed.
All rulings must be supported by sound evidence.
