📚 Taken from: Fatāwā ad-Dīn al-Khāliṣ, Volume 1, Page 307

❀ Introduction:

Entering and exiting the toilet (Bayt al-Khalāʾ) is a daily necessity, and Islam provides precise guidance and supplications related to this act, derived from authentic ḥadīths of the Prophet ﷺ. Below are four authentic rulings and duʿās, along with their textual references.

➊ Supplication Upon Entering the Toilet

Duʿā:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ
“O Allah! I seek refuge with You from the male and female devils.”

Sources:

  • Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (1/62)
  • Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (1/163)
  • Sunan Abī Dāwūd (2/1)
  • Sunan al-Nasāʾī (1/9)
  • Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī (10/1)
  • Sunan Ibn Mājah (1/108)
  • Musnad Aḥmad (3/99, 101, 282)
  • al-Sunan al-Kubrā by al-Bayhaqī (1/95)

Pronunciation Clarification:

Imām al-Khaṭṭābī said in Maʿālim al-Sunan (1/16):
The correct pronunciation is "al-khubuth wal-khabā’ith" — with ḍammah on both khāʾ and bāʾ.

➋ Saying “Bismillah” Before Entering

Hadith:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The veil between the jinn and the private parts of the children of Ādam when they enter the toilet is to say ‘Bismillah’.”

Sources:

  • Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī (1/10)
  • Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ (1/43)
  • Ibn al-Sunnī (Duʿāʾ no. 21)
  • Sunan Ibn Mājah (1/191)
  • Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl (1/88, ḥadīth no. 50) — Chain authenticated due to supporting narrations.

➌ Supplication Upon Exiting the Toilet

Duʿā:

غُفْرَانَكَ
“(O Allah!) I seek Your forgiveness.”

Sources:

  • Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī (1/12)
  • Sunan al-Dāramī (1/174)
  • Ibn al-Sunnī (Duʿāʾ no. 22)
  • al-Mustadrak by al-Ḥākim (1/158)
  • al-Sunan al-Kubrā by al-Bayhaqī (1/197)

Important Note:

The additional wording: “...and Your punishment” (ولا عذابك) is an innovation (bidʿah).

➍ Weak Duʿā Upon Exiting

Narration:

الحمد لله الذي أذهب عني الأذى وعافاني
“All praise is due to Allah who removed harm from me and granted me well-being.”

Source:

  • Sunan Ibn Mājah (1/110)

Authenticity:

This narration is weak (ḍaʿīf) due to the presence of Ismāʿīl ibn Muslim in the chain—a narrator whose weakness is agreed upon by hadith scholars.
