❖ Four Sharʿī Methods for Recitation During the Imam’s Pauses (Saktāt) ❖
Source: Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah, Volume 1, Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, Page 311
Are the following points valid and established in Sharīʿah?
◄ Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ practice two pauses (saktāt) in Salah?
◄ Did he instruct recitation of Sūrah al-Fātiḥah during those pauses?
◄ Did the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) recite al-Fātiḥah during those pauses?
◄ When leading Salah, did they give followers time to recite al-Fātiḥah?
All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:
The Prophet ﷺ is reported to have observed two pauses during Salah:
➊ First Pause: After Takbīr al-Taḥrīmah, before starting the recitation.
➋ Second Pause: After completing recitation, before going into rukūʿ.
Additionally, he used to pause after each verse of Sūrah al-Fātiḥah — this too is established from his Sunnah.
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would pause between verses in his recitation. He would say:
{Al-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbil-ʿālamīn} – then pause,
{Ar-Raḥmānir-Raḥīm} – then pause…”
(Sunan al-Tirmidhī: 2927, graded ḥasan by Ibn Khuzaymah and al-Ḥākim, 2/232; agreed upon by al-Dhahabī)
Another supporting narration exists in Musnad Aḥmad (6/288, ḥadīth 26470) with a sound chain.
Based on scholarly analysis, there are four Sharʿī ways for the follower (muqtadī) to recite al-Fātiḥah behind the Imam in audible prayers:
🗨 Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) said:
“When the Imam begins with the Mother of the Qur’an (Sūrah al-Fātiḥah), then recite it along with him or before him.”
Sources:
Many scholars consider it preferable to recite al-Fātiḥah during the Imam’s second pause, before rukūʿ.
As the Prophet ﷺ paused between verses, followers may recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah during those intervals.
If the Imam recites continuously with no noticeable pauses, the follower should recite al-Fātiḥah along with the Imam silently and attentively.
For a complete discussion, see:
“al-Kawākib al-Durriyyah fī Wujūb al-Fātiḥah Khalf al-Imām fī al-Ṣalāh al-Jahriyyah”
All four are valid and supported by evidence, but the most sound and preferable methods are:
✔ Method 2 (Second Pause)
✔ Method 3 (Pauses Between Verses)
Mawlānā Rashīd Aḥmad Gangohī stated:
“There is no objection to reciting during the pauses.”
(Sabīl al-Rashād wa Taʾlīfāt Rashīdiyyah, p. 511)
He further said:
“Since these verses are specific to Salah, if one recites them during the pauses, it is permitted. These brief verses could even be concluded during the opening praises, and there is no mixing of recitation with the Imam.”
(ibid., testimony: March 2000)
◈ Yes, the Prophet ﷺ observed two saktāt (pauses) in Salah.
◈ Yes, reciting Sūrah al-Fātiḥah during these pauses is permissible and recommended.
◈ Yes, the Companions also practiced this.
◈ Yes, when the Companions led Salah, they gave followers enough time to complete al-Fātiḥah.

❖ Four Sharʿī Methods for Reciting Sūrah al-Fātiḥah Behind the Imam:
Based on scholarly analysis, there are four Sharʿī ways for the follower (muqtadī) to recite al-Fātiḥah behind the Imam in audible prayers:
➊ Recite During the First Pause (Before the Imam Begins)

Even al-Nīmavī (a Ḥanafī scholar) accepted it as ḥasan.
➋ Recite During the Second Pause (After the Imam’s Recitation Ends)
Many scholars consider it preferable to recite al-Fātiḥah during the Imam’s second pause, before rukūʿ.
➌ Recite During Brief Pauses Between Verses in the Imam’s Recitation
As the Prophet ﷺ paused between verses, followers may recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah during those intervals.
➍ If the Imam Makes No Pauses – Recite Alongside Him
If the Imam recites continuously with no noticeable pauses, the follower should recite al-Fātiḥah along with the Imam silently and attentively.
